The Apple Watch Series 6 will most likely be unveiled together with the iPhone 12 series in September. But what new features will Apple's upcoming smartwatch offer?

Reports about the next generation of the Apple Watch have been documented several times in recent months. There has been repeated talk of a function that is due to be released this year. According to this, the new Apple Watch Series 6 will supposedly be able to monitor the oxygen level in the blood. The Taiwanese news site DigiTimes now claims to have learned this. The report states that report:

Apple Watch 6 will be equipped with biosensors that can monitor sleep conditions, detect blood oxygen, and measure pulse rate, heartbeat, and atrial fibrillation. In addition, MEMS-based accelerometers and gyroscopes will be integrated, so the new device will continue to be a leader in measurement accuracy among wearable devices.

According to the source, the development of the new Apple Watch went smoothly because the collaboration with the Taiwanese company ASE Technology went flawlessly. In addition to several statements from various sources, iOS 14 also hints at the feature. Corresponding code snippets were discovered some time ago.

Apple Watch Series 6: How monitoring works

At the time, however, it was unclear whether the feature would only appear with new hardware or would be backwards compatible with watchOS 7. When the original Apple Watch was released in 2015, iFixit discovered that Apple's heart sensors have the ability to monitor blood oxygen levels - but Apple never activated this feature. But how exactly will it all work? Based on the code discovered, the functionality has already been revealed. The Apple Watch will inform the wearer via a notification as soon as the blood oxygen level falls below a healthy threshold. This is around 94 and 98 percent. If the value is below the healthy range, heart and brain function can be impaired. (Photo by raditya / Bigstockphoto)
