Rumor has it that Apple is working on both AR glasses and a VR headset. Now there's a new prediction regarding the release date and pricing.
A new report from JP Morgan suggests that Apple could introduce a new VR headset as early as the first quarter of 2022. writes the China Times:
JPMorgan Chase Securities technology industry analyst Yang Weilun noted that Apple may release a virtual reality (VR) headset in the first quarter of 2022. Most of the components will be manufactured in the fourth quarter of 2021. Shipments will begin in the first quarter, with seven major Taiwanese manufacturers, including TSMC and Largan, entering the supply chain.
According to the report, JP Morgan believes that the design of Apple's VR headset "will be close to that of other brands" and that key specifications will include six lenses, LiDAR, and a time-of-flight sensor.
Apple VR headset: More expensive than an iPhone 12 to produce
This structure is intended to significantly improve the user experience. It is also noted that Apple's product will be significantly more expensive than its competitors. Production costs alone are estimated at over $500. For comparison: a 128 GB iPhone 12 costs an estimated $431. According to the report, some suppliers are currently preparing for the new product, including chip manufacturer TSMC. Some of the suppliers will benefit greatly from this - according to JP Morgan. While the announcement of the VR headset is supposedly getting closer, the launch of the AR glasses is not expected for at least 18 months. The reason for this is the complex design.
