There are currently reports that Sony will be part of Apple's supply chain again - the reason is Apple Glass.

According to rumors, Sony is planning to develop special MicroOLED displays produce, which are intended for Apple Glass. The brand new product is expected to make its debut in early 2022. Ross Young, founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, claims to have learned from multiple sources that Apple has hired Sony for AR/VR glasses displays. The displays in question are half-inch MicroOLED panels with a resolution of 1280×960. The statement confirms the earlier report by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, which indicated that Sony would re-enter Apple's supply chain. Sony has experience in manufacturing tiny displays for headset devices - such as PlayStation VR and the Personal 3D Viewer. In particular, the Personal 3D Viewer used separate OLED displays to display content, similar to how "Apple Glass" is expected to work.

Apple Glass & iPhone: Young has been right several times

The interesting thing – on Sony’s website, the half-inch microOLED display mentioned by Young described. It is the ECX337A model with a contrast ratio of 100,000 to 1. According to Sony, the product is suitable for AR/VR experiences. Ross Young is considered a reliable analyst in the field of display manufacturing. In the past, he has already made several outstanding predictions. In recent months, he has vehemently claimed that Apple will not offer a ProMotion display this year. The launch of the iPhone 12 series confirmed his prediction. Instead, Young claims to have learned that the new display technology requires LTPO to conserve battery life. For this reason, the introduction of ProMotion is not expected until next year. (Photo by agsandrew / Bigstockphoto)
