According to a new report, Apple is in talks with Intel to take over the chipmaker's German modem business.
This is not the first time that Apple has shown interest in Intel's modem business - today's report further cements Apple's takeover desires. The Information reports that Intel wants to sell its smartphone modem business in several parts. Apple is said to be interested in Intel's German division - this is considered the best. In 2011, Intel acquired the chip manufacturer Infineon for 1.4 billion US dollars. This was converted into the base for the modem team and all related activities - the company is currently based in Neubiberg near Munich.

How far the negotiations have progressed The Information cannot say – but if an agreement is reached, several hundred engineers will find a new employer in Apple. Wall Street Journal reported back in April that Apple was planning to take over Intel's modem business - but no details were known at the time. Today's report has now specified Apple's interest. Intel itself has responded to the rumors as follows:
"We have hired outside advisors to help us evaluate strategic options for our 5G wireless phone business," an Intel spokesperson said in a statement. "We have created value in both our portfolio of wireless modem products and our intellectual property. We have expressed strong interest in the business but have nothing more to say at this time."
Apple has already hired several well-known Intel managers. The Information also noted that Stefan Wolff moved from Intel to Apple a few months ago. Wolff previously headed the German modem team at Intel. While Apple had a comparison with Qualcomm has closed, the bitten apple seems to still be interested in a own modem business and to become permanently independent.
