Apple is currently expanding the team working on its mixed reality headset, and the changes in roles suggest that the project for the head-worn device is still alive in Cupertino.
There have long been rumors that Apple is working on several VR headsets, AR glasses, and other augmented and virtual reality products. Current speculation suggests that Apple will begin production of a mixed reality headset in early 2023. However, this is only the beginning of a new product line. This is said to include work on at least three devices, including the high-end "Apple Reality Pro," a second-generation version, and another that is similar to the idea of Apple Glass smart glasses. To develop the hardware, Apple has teams dedicated to the design and production of the unannounced devices. It also appears that Apple has replaced internal teams to increase the chances of success for the still-untapped product category. As Mark Gurman notes in his "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg, reported, there were two major changes in management.
Apple working on the new mixed reality headset
Former head of the self-driving car division Dave Scott returned after leaving the company in early 2021. With his background in the medical and robotics industries and knowledge of supplying complex components, his involvement could mean there will be health-related applications for the headset. Senior Director of Engineering Yaniv Gur has also reportedly moved to the headset team. Gur has been with Apple for over two decades and has previously been responsible for developing iWork apps and other native applications. It is believed that Gur's involvement could lead to the development of productivity apps for the headset. Apple has posted numerous job postings in recent months for the Technology Development Group, which is responsible for developing the headset. Some job postings are related to content production, such as that of a visual effects software developer.

Other job postings suggest that some sort of video service is also in development, possibly including 3D content playable in VR. One listing mentions the development of a 3D MR world that would be comparable to some of Facebook's metaverse efforts. Some listings also reference App Intents, which would mean that apps and services used by the headset could use Shortcuts and Siri in the future. The headset could be a big opportunity for Apple, even if it will be slow to catch on. The headset is expected to sell around 0.7 million units in its first year, and Pegatron is the sole manufacturing partner for the project.
