Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken out to investors in a new letter and shed light on Apple's future plans regarding the iPhone.
The future of the iPhone has been discussed for some time. Many people are asking the question: what comes next? In recent years, Apple has changed its strategy by adding services to its hardware and software products. Even though Apple is the most valuable Company of all time, CEO Tim Cook knows that a company cannot rely so much on a single product. That's why Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple's future is tied to augmented reality and the success of Apple's AR headset.
Apple's goal is to replace the iPhone with AR in ten years, which means that the demand for ABF for AR headsets will exceed at least one billion units in ten years. Apple's only ABF supplier, Unimicron, will be the main beneficiary.
While it's unclear whether Apple's long-rumored first-generation AR headset will work without the iPhone, Kuo believes it will, as this could significantly impact the product's success.
Will Apple replace the iPhone with AR in 10 years?
Positioning the AR headset as just an accessory for the Mac or iPhone is not conducive to the growth of the product. An AR headset that works independently has its own ecosystem and offers the most comprehensive and flexible user experience.
The analyst also comments on the massive transformation the company must make if Apple truly wants AR to replace the iPhone in 10 years. He writes that this product must not only work with a "wide range" of applications and not just specific apps, but that the company must sell "at least" 1 billion AR devices in 10 years:
There are currently more than a billion active iPhone users. If Apple's goal is to replace the iPhone with AR in ten years, that means Apple needs to sell at least a billion AR devices in ten years.
