Rumors that Apple is working on the so-called AirTags have been around since 2019. The small trackers have been discovered in the iOS code several times over the years. Now it is reported that Samsung is working on an AirTag rival called "Galaxy Smart Tag".

When will Apple introduce the AirTags? Fans have been asking this question for months. The small trackers keep appearing in the iOS code. Reports from anonymous sources and patents are fueling the whole thing. But so far Apple has held back the brand new accessory. The reasons can only be speculated. Now South Korean rival Samsung is coming into play. The company is reportedly developing a tracker called "Galaxy Smart Tag" that is intended to be a rival. In August, parallel to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, the South Korean company explained how Samsung's SmartThings Find feature can locate compatible Galaxy products with greater accuracy. It is now claimed that Samsung is using this software for a tag-like item tracker.

AirTags vs. Galaxy Smart Tags

The platform SamMobile discovered a new device called "Galaxy Smart Tag" with model number EI-T5300 in Indonesian telecom certification documents. Based on the name, it is assumed that the product will be integrated with Samsung's SmartThings Find feature and offer location tracking. SamMobile suggests that Samsung may try to base its tracker on ultra-wideband technology. Rumors suggest that AirTags will be based on the U1 ultra-wideband chip, which Apple is said to want to make the basis of its ecosystem. If the information is correct and Samsung does indeed introduce an AirTag rival, things should certainly get interesting. Want to learn more about AirTags? Then check out our comprehensive summary on the topic It explains how the small trackers work based on leaked material. (Image: via Jon Prosser)
