A benchmark leak allegedly involving the upcoming A17 chip claims that the iPhone 15 Pro will be extremely powerful – but there are good reasons to be skeptical.
With the generation change, Apple's chips are getting faster and more powerful, which is reflected in benchmark results. Sometimes, however, the results are a little too high to be realistic. One such leak appeared on Monday in a Contribution by "@Tech_Reve," who shared details from Weibo. The information appeared to be Geekbench results for the A17 chip, the next level of Apple's mobile chip lineup that is expected to be used in the iPhone 15 Pro models. According to the tweet, the A17 scored 3,019 points in the single-core test and 7,860 points in the multi-core version in Geekbench 6.
How realistic are the alleged results of the A17 chip?
Although the A17 is expected to be based on the new 3nm process, making it faster and more efficient, these numbers seem unrealistic, at least when compared to the results of previous A-series generations. First of all, the 3,019 points is over 500 more than the current top-of-the-line A16 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Pro, representing a 20.6% jump in performance year-on-year. However, looking at the A14 compared to the A13 and the A13 compared to the A12, the jumps are 10.8% and 10.6% respectively. The multi-core score has the same issue, but is slightly higher with a 24% jump year-on-year, while the A16 improved by 16.3% and the A15 by 17.4%. Although one would expect a jump in performance every year, it is usually not as big as the rumors suggest.

Apple's typical jump of 10 % is still impressive for its chips, but 20 % would be a bit over the top. When you consider that this rumor is based on an unconfirmed Weibo post without any real evidence or even a Geekbench screenshot, it becomes increasingly implausible as rumors go. In the past, it was also too early to test iPhone 15 Pro models in this way. Moreover, no one has been able to find entries in the Geekbench database that match these results. Other features that will only be used in the iPhone 15 Pro models include Apple's A17 Bionic chip, a faster USB-C port, WiFi 6E, 8 GB more RAM, and solid-state power and volume buttons that provide haptic feedback when pressed.
