Initially, the current iPhone generation could only absorb 5 watts via induction charging. With iOS 11.2, the power was increased to 7.5 watts. Thanks to a new coil, the next iPhone generation should even be able to absorb 15 watts via Qi charging. Wireless charging would thus receive a quick charging function.

The future is set to be wireless. The many different headphones have shown this. Charging the battery is also set to be wireless. Many car manufacturers already offer such charging stations in their cars.
However, the quick-charge function was missing until now. To date, a cable is required for this with an iPhone 8 / 8 Plus & X model. This is set to change with the next iPhone generation.

doubling of performance

The China Times reports that Apple wants to speed up this type of charging - the new iPhones should be able to absorb up to 15 watts. That would double the power. Apple wants to replace the current charging coil, built on a ferrite polymer basis, with a copper coil. This would be thicker and therefore heavier, but the reduced electrical resistance would heat up the iPhone less and thus enable fast charging.

AirPower is also said to have such a copper coil – could this be used to delay the charging mat?

Apple's charging mat

AirPower allows charging of iPhone, Apple Watch and the charging case of the AirPods at the same time. During charging, the user is free to choose the position in which to place the device; a specific zone does not have to be adhered to. Apple made this flexibility possible by installing a total of 22 coils. These were placed next to each other like tiles and can therefore be controlled more precisely.

AirPower price

It is due to go on sale in the fall - whether this will happen at the same time as the new iPhones or later remains unclear. AirPower will be available for 149 US dollars. In this country, the mat will cost between 149 euros and 169 euros. Analysts originally expected a price of 200 US dollars.
