One day before the keynote, Apple released a small update for iPhone and iPad. It fixes exactly one bug – ironically, one that prevented system updates from downloading without Wi-Fi.
Apple has released iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2. Both versions contain the same single fix and no new features. The gap since the previous version is 22 days: iOS 26.6.1 was released on August 17th and addressed nearly thirty security vulnerabilities.

What Apple has corrected
The release notes are as brief as is typical for a fix of this kind: According to Apple, the update resolves a problem that prevented software updates from being downloaded over a cellular connection. That's all it says – no mention of affected mobile network operators, no indication of which version the bug started appearing in, and no figures on its distribution.
The version is installed via Settings → General → Software update. It may take a few minutes for it to appear on all devices.
This leads to a practical point that's easily overlooked when reading: an update is itself a software update. Those affected by the bug can't download the fix via mobile data; they need a Wi-Fi connection. For those on the go, this means: connect to the network first, then download.
Why the update is coming now and not later
The timing is the truly interesting piece of information. Apple is releasing an update on the eve of its keynote for a system that will be superseded by its successor in just a few weeks. This only makes sense if the fix can't wait.
Our assessment: That's precisely the reason. iOS 27 is expected this month, and a system change of this magnitude is initiated by many users on the first day – often wherever they happen to be, and not necessarily on their home Wi-Fi. If the bug persisted, it would affect the largest possible number of devices during this very transition. This connection isn't documented; Apple offers no explanation for the timing.

What this means for the switch to iOS 27
The recommendation is clearer in this case than usual for intermediate versions. An update without new features can normally be left for a few days. This doesn't apply here, because the fix paves the way for the next major version.

One more note regarding expectations: Anyone hoping for an increase in functionality will not find it here. This version is maintenance, and that is typical for a system generation shortly before its replacement.
A cleaner before the big leap
On its own, iOS 26.6.2 is the least spectacular release of the month. However, considering the order of releases, it makes sense – a final adjustment before all attention shifts to the next generation.
