Nearly two years after its announcement, Apple's Fleetwood Mac documentary has a name and a release date. "Fleetwood Mac: The Chain" will launch worldwide on Apple TV at the end of January. The timing is no coincidence.
Apple Original Films has announced the title and release date of the first fully authorized documentary about Fleetwood Mac. According to a statement from Apple TV Press, "Fleetwood Mac: The Chain" will premiere worldwide on the Apple TV app on Friday, January 29, 2027. It is directed by five-time Academy Award nominee and Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award recipient Frank Marshall.
Apple had already announced the project on November 19, 2024, though it was still untitled at the time. This means 801 days, or just over two years and two months, will pass before its premiere.
Key Facts at a Glance
- "Fleetwood Mac: The Chain" will launch worldwide on Apple TV on January 29, 2027.
- It is the first fully authorized documentary about the band.
- Frank Marshall directs, and the book is by Mark Monroe.
- The release is six days before the 50th anniversary of the album "Rumours".
The band tells its own story
For the first time, Fleetwood Mac tell their story in their own words. Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks, who came together in 1974, share their perspectives. The film traces the band's journey from their record-breaking albums and tours to the present day, featuring previously unreleased material and exclusive new interviews.
Christine McVie died in November 2022. According to Apple's 2024 announcement, she is featured in the film through archival interviews. The band has sold more than 220 million records worldwide.
Why the film is called "The Chain"
The title is taken from the song "The Chain". According to Apple, it is the only song on "Rumours" where all five members are credited as authors, and in the film it represents the bond that held the band together despite all the conflicts.
"Rumours" was released on February 4, 1977. Apple is launching it just before the 50th anniversary: The premiere on January 29 is six days earlier.
Who is behind the documentary
The film is produced by The Kennedy/Marshall Company and White Horse Pictures. The team includes Nigel Sinclair, who previously produced "The Beatles: Eight Days a Week" and "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan." Mark Monroe of Diamond Docs is writing the screenplay and is an executive producer.
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Untitled Announcement | November 19, 2024 |
| Title and date | October 22, 2026 |
| Premiere on Apple TV | January 29, 2027 |
| 50 years of "Rumours" | February 4, 2027 |
A well-chosen start date
Since the worldwide premiere is on the same day, the film will be released in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland simultaneously with the US. Apple is placing the film alongside its own documentaries such as "STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie" and "Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me." In the sports category, the announced documentary series about Andre Agassi will also be released.
I think the timing is clever: Around the 50th anniversary of "Rumours," the album will be discussed anyway, and that's exactly when the film is released. Anyone who wants to see it needs a subscription to the Apple TV streaming service.
