A new report confirms previous rumors that the next iPhone generation will be equipped with a new display technology.
In December, a report surfaced that premium iPhones will be getting a new type of panel in fall 2019. They are called Y-OCTA and are said to be cheap to produce. The new OLED panels are said to come from Samsung. The special thing about them is that the touch-sensitive layer is completely built into the display. Now Samsung is not the only possible producer. According to a recent report, the Chinese company BOE has also applied to produce these new displays. By installing these screens, the new iPhone models would not only be thinner but also lighter than the current generation.
Future of 3D Touch uncertain
It remains unknown whether the new panels will be equipped with 3D Touch. At the end of August 2018, a rumor surfaced that Apple would no longer integrate 3D Touch from 2019. Several reasons were given for this at the time. Firstly, the function is of little use and is far too complex to manufacture. The sensors required for this make the manufacture of the displays much more difficult, which is why production is also more expensive. In addition, 3D Touch is not particularly popular among users.
