Now Digitimes reports that Apple has halted work on this project for the time being. That doesn't mean the topic is completely off the table, but the focus is currently elsewhere.

Rumors about such a device have been circulating for some time, accompanied by speculation about display sizes, possible application scenarios, and an expected market launch between 2026 and 2028. Now it seems clear: Apple is putting development on hold for the time being. There are several reasons for this decision – technical challenges, high costs, and a lack of market momentum all play a role.
Apple focuses on foldable iPhone
According to Digitimes , instead of a foldable iPad, Apple currently wants to focus on another project: a foldable iPhone. This device is expected to be released in 2026 and unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. This shows that Apple isn't completely abandoning foldable technology, but is instead focusing on a more compact device with greater market potential.
The planned foldable iPad: An overview
According to previous information, the originally planned foldable iPad was supposed to have a screen size between 18.8 and 20.2 inches. Technically, an OLED display with a crease-free design was planned. Some sources described it as a tablet, others more like a MacBook without a keyboard—in other words, a portable device consisting entirely of a flexible display.
Why Apple is taking a break
According to Digitimes, Apple has halted development of the foldable iPad for several reasons. First, there are ongoing challenges in manufacturing large foldable displays, especially those without a visible crease. Second, the production costs for such displays remain high. Third, demand for large foldable devices currently doesn't seem strong enough to make a timely market launch economically viable.
No final decision
It's important to note that the decision to discontinue development of the foldable iPad is not final. Apple could resume the project at any time if technical conditions improve. Above all, manufacturing costs would have to decrease and the durability of the displays would have to increase. If that happens, a market launch starting in 2027 is conceivable – but currently rather unlikely.
