At the beginning of the year, rumors arose that the mass production AirPower would launch at the end of January. In addition to statements from anonymous sources, several traces were found in the current iOS 12.2 beta. Many fans, observers and analysts now actually believe that Apple could present the charging mat this week - since AirPower requires at least iOS 12.2, sales would only start after the final version is released. In addition to the Qi charging mat, a seventh generation iPod touch is also expected. Whether Apple will actually present both products in a press release remains to be seen, of course - but it would not be unrealistic at this point.
Reasons for the delay of AirPower
AirPower allows you to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and the AirPods charging case at the same time. During charging, the user is free to place the device in any position – there is no need to stick to a specific zone. This flexibility is made possible by installing over 20 power coils.
In September last year, AirPower disappeared almost completely from Apple's homepage - without comment. Many observers interpreted this as the quiet end of the charging station. Shortly afterwards, a report with insider information appeared. According to this, Apple had two problems with the charging mat. The first major problem was the overheating of the Qi mat. This was said to be so severe that even the connection between the device and the charging station was disrupted. Another problem lay in the arrangement, because the installed power coils were said to have been divided into three equal groups. Each of the coils is a different size. Due to a lack of space, this is said to have led to overlapping one another, which, among other things, caused this severe overheating. It was only at the beginning of the year that another report surfaced that the problems had been solved.
